Islamic Months

Islam uses a purely lunar calendar of twelve months. The start of each month is determined by the timing of the New moon.
First month is known as Muharram, meaning the forbidden, is known as the sacred month in which all unlawful acts are forbidden. Hazrat Hussain (R.A) was martyred in this month. 10th of Muharram is an important date in the Islamic history. On this day Prophet Adam (PBUH) was born and entered the Paradise, the oceans and heavens were created. Holy Prophet (PBUH) said "It is my thought that by fasting on the 10th of Muharram Allah Ta'ala will pardon the sins of the past year"
Second month is known as Safar which means whistling of the wind. It was probably windy when the name of this month was decided as almost all the names are decided due to the weather conditions. In this month Hazrat Ali (R A) married Prophet’s daughter Hazrat Fatima (R.A).
Then comes, Rabi-al-Awwal. Holy Prophet (PBUH) was born and departed after 63 years in this month. Hazrat Abu bakr was appointed as the first caliph of Islam in this month.
Rabi-al-Awwal was followed by Rabi-Al-Thani which means the second season of spring. Battle of Furu' from Buhraan took place in which the Holy Prophet did not take part in, instead he consigned one of his Companions as the colonel.
Fifth month of Islamic calendar is Jumada-Al-Awwal. Holy prophet (pbuh) married his first wife 15 years before his prophecy and in the very same month Holy prophet's grandfather Abdul Muttalib passed away.
Jumada-Al-Thani is the sixth month of the Islamic Calendar; it means the second month of summer.
Seventh in the list is Rajab, which means 'to respect'. It was one of the most sacred months for the Arabs. Holy prophet (PBUH) ascended to heaven on 27th of this month (mi'raaj).
Our Holy Prophet has said, "Shaban is my month and Ramadan the month of Allah Ta'aalaa." Shaban is the eight month of Islamic calendar. It means undisturbed increase. Ramadan, the month of fasting, is a very blessed month. Hazrat Hassan (R.A), holy prophet’s grandson was born in this month. Quran, the holy book, was revealed on the 27th of ramzan.
Next comes Shawwal which in tenth in the list. First day of Shawwal is Eid-ul-fitr, the day of festival and when all sins are forgiven as a reward for fasting and prayers in the month of Ramadan.
Zul-Qa'dah has been taken from the word "Qa'ada" which means, to sit. This is the third sacred month in which fighting was forbidden. Everyone was asked to stop what they're doing and prepare for pilgrimage (Hajj). Battle of trench also took place in this month
Last of them is Zul-hijjah, this is the month of hajj followed by Eid-ul-Adha. Holy prophet performed the farewell hajj and delivered his last sermon, known as the farewell sermon. Hazrat Umer, the second caliph died in this month.
